Access Keys

Access Keys are simply keyboard short–cuts that provide a certain level of site navigation using the keyboard only. This obviously helps people with limited motor skills who may find using the mouse difficult. But it also helps anyone who is used to navigating their software using keyboard short–cuts.

Standards Compliance

  1. All pages on this site validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict.
  2. All stylesheets on this site pass W3C validation.
  3. All pages on this site are Watchfire WebXACT (formerly known as Bobby) AAA approved, complying with all the WebXACT guidelines. This is, to some extent, a value judgement because many accessibility features cannot be automatically measured. We have reviewed all the guidelines and believe that all these pages are in compliance.
  4. We believe that this site at least meets the WCAG guidelines for AA (Priority 2) compliance. We additionally believe that this site meets most, if not all of the AAA (Priority 3) guidelines. Again, the level of compliance with WCAG guidelines is a value judgement, because many guidelines are intentionally ambiguous and cannot be tested automatically.
  5. All pages on this site use structured semantic markup. H2 tags are used for main titles, H3 tags for subtitles and so on. For example, on this page, JAWS users can skip to the next section within the accessibility statement by pressing ALT+INSERT+3.
  6. The contact details displayed on the Home Page and on the Contact Page are marked-up as an hCard microformat. Microformats are a set of simple, open data formats built upon existing and widely adopted standards. For more information visit the Microformats.org website.

Navigation Aids

  1. All major site navigation elements are grouped together in the markup near the top of the document flow, below the page header.
  2. A Skip To Content link enables visitors to bypass the navigation elements and jump straight to the main content on the page.
  3. All navigation elements have been given descriptive TITLE attributes.
  4. The current page is indicated by giving the page tab a distinctive contrasting color.

Links

  1. All page links are in a contrasting colour and display a dotted underline when hovered over.
  2. Many links have TITLE attributes which describe the link in more detail.
  3. Links are written to make sense out of context.
  4. Links to external sites are denoted by a small box and arrow graphic displayed to the right of the link like this. The TITLE attribute is also used to further impress upon the visitor that the link will take them to an external site.

Images

All content images have been given descriptive ALT attributes. Any purely decorative images have been given a null ALT value.

Visual Design

  1. This site uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for visual layout.
  2. This site uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified “text size” option in visual browsers.
  3. Each page is still readable using browsers or devices which do not support CSS.
